I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost … I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.
Chapter II
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.
Chapter III
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in … it’s a habit … but,
my eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.
Chapter IV
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.
The Scene:
I’m in my home office being super productive… then remembered I had to leave RIGHT THEN if I wanted to see my sons talent show and would have no time to work.
My Dilemma
I want to see my son and I want to continue to be productive.
My values are in conflict… I want to do both…I can only do one. (feel familiar?)
My Internal Dialogue
“I should honor my business, it’s important.” “I should really be there for my son, it’s important.”
“I can get this work done another time.” “It’s only two minutes of him dribbling two basketballs…he will understand if I can’t make it.”
My Guilt-free Decision
I’m going to watch my son. I can work anytime I want, yet I can only go see my 6 year old son dribble two basketballs live in-front of the whole school ONCE.
How I got there
I asked myself: looking back on today, which will I regret NOT doing?
I would have regretted not seeing my son and sharing in that experience.
What about you?
We all face daily dilemmas where two important values are in conflict. We feel guilt, anxiety and confusion.
There is no right or wrong answer to what you decide to do… I request you ask yourself some questions to find out what is MOST IMPORTANT to YOU AT THAT TIME.
Cut through the BS and honor what you REALLY feel… because the pain of regret weighs tons and we only regret the things we DON’T do in life.
What you tell yourself inside your head, called “self talk”, irrefutably determines your results.
When was the last time you told yourself that you were the BEST?
How often do you believe in yourself and genuinely think that you will do well in a given situation?
Below is a one minute video clip of my son, Keaton, who taught me a lesson in positive self talk and believing in yourself that you deserve to learn from.
What are some of the things you are telling yourself about a challenge you have in front of you now?
How is that “talk” helping you succeed?
If not, what would allow you to believe more in yourself and improve your “talk.”
